Clay Trimester 2
Here is what will be happening in the coming weeks in art class….
Kindergarten: We will be making ceramic pinch pots, hands, and snails in the coming weeks before break. . The students will learn how to make a pinch pot, roll a coil, and add texture to their clay with tools. They will learn that clay is a combination of minerals and water that comes from the ground. They will learn what a kiln is, and how it works.
1st Grade: 1st grade students will learn how to score, slip, and seal clay by making monster pinch pots. They will use their imaginations to come up with a design, and then take it a step further by coming up with a name and personality for their monster.
2nd Grade: 2nd grade students will review how to score, slip, and seal by making animal pinch pots. These animals could be their spirit animal, an animal they are passionate about, or an animal that is currently in their life.
3rd Grade: 3rd grade students will learn how to make clay rattles that we call soul shakers. Students were asked to connect their designs to a special memory, place, or person.
4th Grade: 4th grade students will be creating ceramic tea cups or mugs using symbolic elements to personalize their cups. They will end this project with a tea party towards the end of the trimester after their projects are glazed and fired a second time in the kiln.
5th Grade: 5th grade students will be making coil pots. This is the largest project of their elementary career. The coil pots must be 4-8 inches tall, use two or more techniques, demonstrate personal meaning, and be fully scored, slipped, and sealed.
