Recommended for grades 3rd-5th, but any grade level may try this challenge!
Please watch this inspiring video for Earth Day before you move forward with this assignment...
Objectives: To take an ordinary object or objects that you would normally recycle or throw away and transform it into a work of art, by cutting it, shaping it, painting it, drawing on it, and or displaying it in a different way.
Materials: You may choose the materials you use, but it must be something that you are reusing. I used an egg carton, watercolors, embroidery thread and needle, watercolor, white paint pen, and scissors.
Hey Everyone!
For this project, I want you to take a normal household container or product of some sort and change the way people view it so much that it becomes a work of art. I chose to transform an egg carton into a hanging piece of art. Hanging works of art are called mobiles. Wednesday April 22nd is Earth Day and for Earth Day I want you to reuse materials. Many artists reuse materials to make art. In fact, many artists are famous for using trash to create works of art.
Another one of my favorite artists is Vik Muniz. He is from Brazil. He uses all sorts of unusual materials to create artwork. Some of his works made out of trash are pictured below. There is even a documentary about these works. He traveled back to Brazil and used the trash from landfills in Brazil to create these works using a team of people. If you look closely, you can see the trash. They arranged the trash how they wanted and then took the pictures from a great distance above the arrangements. The last picture shows Muniz with one of the photographs of his pieces.
Here are more pictures of my hanging mobile. Feel free to make something out of an egg carton too, there are so many things that you can do with egg cartons!
Here is another example of a work of art that one of our Stargate student's grandmother made. The artist's name is Janet Heffner and she made this work recently during the stay-at-home orders. She took ordinary wrappers from green tea and transformed it into a flower and plant centerpiece.
I can't wait to see what you all come up with!!! You all are so creative! Believe in yourself!
Don't forget to upload your picture. :)

What materials do you think the mobile(hanging piece of art) below is made out of?
